Yes. Today is Groundhog Day. Reasons I like Groundhog Day?
1.) It’s a really random holiday. Random is cool.
2.) It’s a holiday revolving around a rodent.
3.) There was a great movie about it (Bill Murray = win.)
4.) It’s fun to say Punxsutawney Phil.
But one of my favorite reasons is that my friends and I used to have a bum-day every year on Groundhog Day. What is bum-day? Well if you’re guessing that it involved a lot of sitting on your bum, you’re right. My sister and I would converge upon our friends house early-ish in the morning and we would proceed straight to a.) the video store and b.) the grocery store. At the video store we would aim for three to four movies that were typically horrific. The reason for being horrific? We had to find movies that the four of us hadn’t seen before…and because the four of us managed to see most movies with good reviews…that left a lot of really horrible choices. So after wandering around in the video store way too long, we would proceed to the grocery (which was frequently right there…this was back in the day when grocery stores HAD video stores in them #goodoldays) Anyway, we would buy a lot of junk. And I mean a lot of junk. When we had finished gathering our goods, we would go to their house and spend one whole sickening day eating junk food till we craved fresh fruit and watching horrible films. After each film, we would choose a scene to take a picture from, and then document our own interpretation of that moment. If only I had copies of those pictures scanned into my computer… *sigh*
ANYWAY, all that being said, I don’t get Groundhog Day at all. I’m really confused pretty much every year…if he see’s his shadow, it’s early spring? but if it’s sunny… what?! I’m confused.
For instance: Last year Punxsutawney Phil predicted an earl spring…that was the morning after the great MO snow-pocalypse of 2011 .
Early spring? ey? Say what?
However, today the word on Facebook (my ever reliable source of information in regard to rodent predictions…) Punxsutawney Phil is saying…six more weeks of winter. However…this is what it looks like outside right now…
Is that blue sky and sunshine I see?
Why yes, absolutely yes.
Huh.
So pretty much, befuddled. But befuddled, or not, I will happily enjoy a sunny day, whatever the diagnosis of the future weather be. That said, I hope you all have a sunny, and happy Groundhog Day as well.
Cheers!
